mp2 undefined symbols on Mac OS X 10.2

I'm having problems getting mp2 to install on my Mac OS X 10.2 Server.  
the make test returns the following:

......dyld: /usr/bin/perl Undefined symbols: _perl_get_sv

for pretty much every single test.  Of course this makes me think my 
perl installation is broken.  I'm attempting to rebuild it.  While I'm 
at it, has anyone experienced this problem or have any insight into 
what may have caused it?
