  I guess I should have clarified that a bit.  Red Hat 8 hasn't been
  supported by Red Hat themselves in years.  Even the Fedora Legacy
  project (fedoralegacy.org) has stopped supporting it. 

  Upgrading to a recent version such as Fedora Core 2 or preferably
  Core 3 will help loads in several areas such as securtiy fixes,
  bug fixes, and most notably speed. 

  I would guestimate my workstation increased by 10% in the overall
  feeling of speed just by moving from Core 2 to Core 3. 

  Besides all of this it is a very good idea to keep up to date in
  general. You'll have less issues of software incompatibility if
  you are not too far behind or too bleeding edge.  I typically
  stay no more than one version of Core behind.
