It's probably easier to arrange to host them than it is to put a system 
like that in place.

Why not throw it on a VPS at a hosting company, and run it from there?  The 
monthly bill probably won't kill you, and you'll be able to turn it off if 
they don't pay their bill.

Ignoring for a moment the "remotely disable for nonpayment" issue, if you 
rent the software out by giving people copies, every copy is another 
instance that you need to maintain.  If you instead sell them a service 
that you host, adding more clients won't affect your maintenance workload.
