Sorry, but I think all of you have missed the point.

&reg is the unterminated entity in question. Isn't that what appeared in the
validator's error message? It should be &reg; - meaning Registered trademark.

So, the problem was to freak, or judicious, placement of & followed by reg which
triggered the error. I say judicious because I assume the example was
deliberately fabricated to highlight this very problem.

There may be another point there, to do with escaping & itself, of course.
