SER1 oil gun versus grease gun

In studying various old manuals it appears that the proper way to lubricate Series I fittings is with an "oil gun" filled with SAE 140 gear oil, not grease. But then one manual also says that if high pressure greasing equipment is used, be careful not to blow out the seals.
This instruction seems to include the steering box and relay, both of which obviously don't use grease, as well as the U-joints, driveshaft splines, and pedal bushings, all of which could use grease or oil. I've been using lithium grease in the greasable fittings and 90 weight gear oil in the steering box and relay.
Which is it? Does it matter? Should I get an oil gun and flush out the grease from these fittings? Where do you get an oil gun, anyway?
Doug.
