Hi Martin,

to overcome the noise in my S1 I wired a 110db fire alarm buzzer into the 
indicator circuit - this thing is very loud - so much so that pedestrians on 
the other side of the intersection can hear it.

The indicators are allowed to have either (or both) a visual or noise
indication that they function correctly. The fact that you couldn't hear the
noise in a Land Rover doesn't matter. The tester will hear the clicking or
"tick tock"of the flasher unit as it's working inside the garage!
