If its a Lucas alternator, yes you should replace it - with a Bosch
alternator.  The Bosch units are far more reliable.  In terms of fixable
most auto-electricians repair or have exchange units for alternators.

Yes I know that's not standard. Mine seems to have a habit of throwing out
too many volts. This makes the lights nice and bright and the heater fan go
into turbo mode. Trouble is that I am getting through rather a lot of light
bulbs.

Is the voltage regulator bit on the alternator replaceable/fixable?
