SER1 engine coolant system

Any suggestions on how to clean the coolant system in the cylinder
block?  This Landy is from the desert and has accumulated a large
amount sediment.  The drain vavle is plugged and there is scale
throughout.

It is the orginal engine, and appears to be it's orginal incarnation. 

Do you think the thermistat and water pump are beyond hope?  they were
filled with scale and rust when I took them off this weekend.
