Hi Bob,

They're probably a little better than that :-)  The top-of-the-line 
automatics made be Warner Gear (not Warn) locked when there was forward 
torque in the half-shafts and unlocked when reversed in 4x2 mode (I think 
-- its been a while since I looked at one).  To do this they had lots of 
fiddly bits that tended to break if you actually used 4x4 (modern 4x4's 
are designed for 90+% 4x2 onroad use -- fuel economy and operating noise 
are far more important than 4x4 performance or durability, no matter what 
the ads imply).  Since this doesn't sound ideal for a Series One I would 
shy away.
