Good to see that the Garage is continuing to be as active as it was when it first started - well done Jeremy ! Its been a chaotic 15 months as we had to move out of our house last Easter while it was being refurbed and it is only this week getting the final 'snagging' done. Are builders the same the world over ???? On the Land Rover front its also been busy as my 5 'regular' vehicles have now been suplemented by an 81" Rolls (the ex Duxford one that was bought by Peter Galilee). The 'parade vehicle' parts have been taken off and stored as it was just not practical to use like this in the UK and the weight of the rear step and steel/wood/perspex surround caused steering wobbles. It drives fantastically and I am totally hooked on it - accelerates like a TD5 and cruises effortlessly at 75mph ! I took it to the N Yorkshire Dales in June and it was a total pleasure to drive and everyone else that tried it (including Ken W) agreed. I have now found another one and am looking for any sources of Rolls B40 engines (BSF) or spare parts if anyone out there can help. I have solved one repetitively annoying problem this year by the use of Tetraboost ( http://tetraboost.com/ ). This additive turns unleaded fuel into genuine leaded and all my vehicles are starting better hot, running smoother and generally better to drive (even when compared to VSP or one of the other additives). I dont understand the science behind these things and can only comment on what works for me. The other recommendation I have, especially if you dont use your vehicle for long periods of time, is to put a fuel catalyst in your tank; it stops unleaded fuel going 'thick' and blocking up the fuel pick up pipe. I have had one of these in an 86" that was laid up for 5 years and the fuel was fine and the gauze clear. On the 'hobby business' front, Stokenham Spares continues to tick along with lots of activity after a new Legend has emerged. (If you are not in the S1 Club then you really should join, as the Legend really is a fantastic source of knowledge and parts). 80% of our orders go overseas and the problem has been sourcing original NOS parts and not selling them. We have found out that the two golden rules of business are firstly, when you have just sold out of an irreplaceable line which has been available for ages then everyone wants one (ie door tops, trafficators, gauges, etc) and secondly that good second hand parts that we know are getting difficult to replace (based on our joint fleet of over 20 Series Ones) dont sell as well as expected; we recently scrapped 25 pairs of usable s/hand wings after failing to sell them at various autojumbles at £10 - including the bonnet clamps - but there are only so many times you can load, unload and store something large and delicate as wi! ngs, so Keith Wadsworth must owe me a few beers ! Also, the number of people wanting to own S1's, but not to have to do any work is on the increase and we have recently bought in a couple of vehicles to supply to this market ( a 1948 circa chassis no 1800 and an 'untouched' 88" ). Separate to this we have also decided to sell the S1 Cuthbertson (the prototype and the only S1 Cuthbertson produced). It comes with all the spares you need to restore the unique Cuthbertson bit of the vehicle, but remember there is still the vehicle itself. Its a big job and not for the faint hearted and there is an image of it on the www.dunsfold.com website. If anyone is holidaying in S Devon during the 2nd half of August then let me know and arrange to come in for a chat and a coffee.
