Question: Which 2-ltr?
The earlier one has a bulb-like oil-filter with two pipes that feed it,
the later one has a long canister that hangs down from a mounting
Both are on the exhaust-side of the engine.
I've rebuilt a 2ltr engine, so I can offer some advice
My Series I has taken me to Wales and back, has been used as a
road-going CCV-competition vehicle for four years now... and only once
let me down (which was my own fault anyway...)
