Hi all,
 
I have just finished to insert new front chassis bushes on the 80's chassis.
I used the later series types as supplied by all the known Land Rover
dealers. The bore however was too tight and I had to open it using an
expandable reamer. The dimension at which they entered and which still gives
an acceptable press fit has been 30,22 to 30,25 mm. This dimension was found
by trial and error. I reamed the bore up, inserted the bush and when the
force to get it in became too much I took it out again and opened the bore a
bit more. 
 
I used a high grade threaded rod and a special nut I had made years ago.
This fits exactly to the contour of the bush and is 0,5mm smaller in the
outside diameter. This works more or less to pull the bush into the chassis.
As the pressure the nut exerts on the bush is very high towards the end of
the travel this tends to open up a bit, thus increasing the OD of the bush.
After some frustration then, before pulling in the last 5mm or so I tapped
the bush with a drift to bend it back to the original OD. This made the last
part of the exercise  much easier. 
 
The special nut is a very simple design and it took a tool maker only half
an hour to make it. The selected steel is of the highest quality thus
leading to wear of the replaceable rod instead of the nut. I used up 3
pieces of rod as in the beginning they all chewed up with the overtight
bores.
 
Even so it has been a pig's job and I definitely need an enormous steak now
to make up for all the muscle invested.
