[Date index for 2005/08/19]
Yes, September 1st 1955 was the date that 'Oxford' and 'Cambridge' set
off down the Dover Road for the air-ferry to France and then Singapore.
I know, because I was there - I saw 'Cambridge' go past on the A20 at
Lee Green in SE London, when I was a spotty youth in shorts ('short
pants' for the benefit of our Transatlantic cousins).
Which is why I've been beavering behind the scenes to do something
positive to mark the 50th. Unfortunately I'll miss the actual
anniversary... but then so will the 'official' events, which will be in
October. I can't say very much because I don't know what's supposed to
be public knowledge, and what isn't. Suffice it to say that those still
pining for their own copy of the book may soon be satisfied, and some
barely-seen film footage may soon be visible again.
The biggest problem (in the modern world in general, methinks!) is that
people don't return calls, or provide information that you seek until
you hassle and hassle them. That, and the financial outlay involved, is
what's delayed things with my project - and the fact that I've just this
minute returned from the LR specialist in the courtesy car, rather than
my Classic RR is a possible problem with the financial side. Rear diff
pan and some body mounting sections suffering from voracious tin worm
are just the sort of things you DON'T want when you're trying to finance
3 days of filming the other end of the country. Are there any investors
out there? Pounds, Dollars, Dirhams, Shekels, even Euros accepted!
Sorry to be secretive - you guys will be the first to hear the news when
there's some news for you to hear.
