Can you tell me what the difference is?

I have a series 2 primary pinion set in one of my series 1 gear boxes and it
fitted straight in using the original clutch plate.   The Borg and Beck 9"
pressure plate is also interchangeable between Land Rovers.

Nope.  S1 plate is different than S2.
