Me again.
I believe that one of the reasons for the change is that the cap on the
selector top cover does not have a good seal from water or dust particularly
when tension is lost from the retaining spring. The blanking of the filler
was done to reduce the possibility of oil contamination.
After all you have to get under the vehicle to fill all the other 90ep
items. transfer, diffs, swivels you may as well do the gearbox at the same
time. Thinking back to my series IIa I believe that the deluxe trim also
covered the tunnel so you couldn't see the rubber grommet if it was there at
all.

I guess that is called 'progress' Jon!
Actually, I have also seen gearbox tunnels with these large rubber bungs
fitted on the top as you describe. I wonder if early Series 2 gearboxes were
like the Series 1 type and it was possible to fill them from the top? and
rather than fit the swing away flap, they chose the cheaper option or the
rubber bung? - just a thought.....

I may not have been clear, on a series one gearbox there is a nice big
oil filler hole with a lid which is held on by a clip which slides
away. (under the flap behind the main gear stick). This makes pouring
new oil in nice an' easy :-)
On my series 3 ( and I presume all such beasts since it looks like the
official parts pictures ) this same hole is under a rubber bung ( in
the same position behind the gear stick) and is blanked off with a
steel plug. To replace the main gear box oil you have to crawl around
underneath and pour oil in the level plug. What I don't understand is
why they changed to this system, and why bother with the rubber bung in
the cab since there is nothing behind it except the blanked off oil
filler. Or am I being dim ?
