Austin also built the Austin Champ for the MOD - a supremely over-engineered and over expensive vehicle that had independent suspension and reverse gear was in the transfer box: effectively this gave as many reverse gears as forwards gears. They had a Rolls Royce engine. Unfortunately for Austin, the Series 1 proved to be every bit as effective for an awful lot less. The Gypsy had an all steel construction and apparently they had a better ride quality than the Landrover. There is something in the back of my mind that says the early Austin Gypsy had an innovative suspension system but this got phased out in favour of cheaper leaf springs.
