hello again,

my 1958 88" is almost back on the road here*, but the MOT has thrown
up a few problems with the steering, and attempts to make good the
steering box have failed. It looks like I need a new box, along with
a few other bits of rod and pulley.

I can find no listings for the 88" steering box (p/n 271362), even
though it has a separate number, but I note that the parts book says
the 86" worm and nut item (p/n 265490) should be replaced with the
88" version anyway.

Craddock will do a reconditioned exchange unit for £250 (!). They
list it as suitable for an 86", but the part number they quote is
actually 274296, which ought to stand for the recirculating ball
conversion kit. I'm guessing that it's actually the same item as
would have been fitted to an 88" anyway.

So could I please ask:

* am i right that the recon units labelled 86" will be fine in my
88"? I know, I'll just ask them tomorrow, but I thought I'd check
because:

* is there a better way to get one, preferably without spending £250?
They do seem hard to find.

* is there a later part that I could fit instead (and that would be
an improvement)?

(she came to me with s2 engine and gearbox and a flip-front, so
authenticity isn't really an option)

thank you very much,

will

* whereupon I will start pestering the list about how to connect up
the heater, since my new windscreen actually has vents :)
