Hi folks!
I have been reassembling the 2 Litre diesel engine for my S1 over the
last two nights and I have noticed a slight anomaly between the Parts
Catalogue and the workforce manual.  The parts catalogue lists four oil
scraper rings for the pistons whereas the workshop manual refers to
eight oil scraper rings (rings four and five on each piston).  I have
dismantled two of these engines and both only had a single oil scraper
ring per piston - someone may just have been economising when they were
rebuilt in the past!
I purchased a full set of piston rings from Cox and Turner here in the
UK and they provided me with 8 oil scraper rings.  Since Cox and Turner
sent me eight oil scraper rings I have gone with the workshop manual and
installed them all.  Does anyone have access to any Service
Bulletins/updates that would indicate whether there should be four or
eight oil scraper rings fitted to the Series 1 Diesel?  The only update
I have relating to this engine makes no mention of the number of oil
scraper rings.  I have a nagging suspicion that I read somewhere that
whilst there is a space on the skirt of the piston for a second oil
scraper ring, it is not actually needed!  If I leave the second oil
scraper ring in place on each piston will it cause any problems?  If
anyone can cast  light on this it would be greatly appreciated - If
necessary, I'd rather pull the pistons again tonight and remove the
second oil scraper rings before the sump, head, injector pump etc are
refitted! =20
