A few things come to mind, acknowledging that you have said that nothing is
broken or bent.
Although unlikely with the history of the changed steering. Reduced lock
can indicate the stops on the swivel out of adjustment (or a stone or
something similar jammed under the stop) preventing the swivel going to full
lock.
A more likely thing is a bent track rod or drag link. Having said that
nothing is bent - did you also check the longitudinal steering link? A bent
in any of the links will reduce the travel from side to side.
Another thing you should to do is to check the top and bottom steering arms
on the steering relay box under load. It is possible that the spline is
worn and slipping under the extra load at full lock or the bearings need
replacement. While the vehicle is on the ground, get someone to sit in the
drivers seat turning the wheel hard to each side while you view each
steering arm and the relay shaft turn. If the shaft turns independently of
the arms or it rocks from side to side in the housing you need to overhaul
the relay and/or arms.
Hope that helps!
Cheers

BTW the steering in a 1960 series 2 should be 3.3 turns Lock to Lock.

Subject: SER1 Steering problem
Hi folks,
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to this odd problem we've just got.
I'ts not a Series 1 but my fiancee's 1960 109 Series 2 so similar
enough.... We got it stuck up against a fence on sloping muddy ground and
had a lot of shunting up and down to get it out. Driving home afterwards we
noticed a dramatic reduction in right hand steering lock. Like the two
right turns we did involved pavement and a hedge to get it round. There was
nothing obviously broken or bent. The following day I jacked up the front
end, the steering moves from lock to lock quite smoothly, with not too much
play at the wheel. To make it more drivable I removed the steering arm off
the box, centralised the steering wheel, so it was in the middle of the 3
and a half turns from lock to lock, or whatever, centralised the front
wheels and bunged it back on. Its better, but still obviously not right.
The result is a much reduced left lock, but not as bad as the previous
right lock, and the right lock is sort of livable with.
Obviously that comes under the 'first aid' catagory rather than a repair,
but we're not sure what the problem is. I'm guessing at a problem with the
steering box, but I've never come across one do this before.
Any ideas?
cheers
