Whoops, I fooled around and got it! I went back thru Mark's previous
emails,
tried again the code:

UNIX_TIMESTAMP(apps.timestamp) AS timestamp

but went back into the Date call, and took out the '$' on app.$timestamp:

[% date.format(app.timestamp, format = '%Y:%m:%d') %]

He works! I'm a happy camper.

Sometimes you have to try every combination.
