Dennis, chastened but wiser, responds:

Ahhhhhh! Your nudge saved me hours of continued starring
bleakly in the wrong direction. I found the error of my ways
-- I use a site.cfg hash-set to display config var options
at the command line using nicely formatted keys, dots,
values. Another routine writes the nicely formatted results
into my config/site file, Of course he uses the same
formatting code, which truncates the keys and values....

I will now go stand in front of the mirror and say my name
backwards until the room stops spinning.
