No, not in TT2.  '|' is a direct alias for 'FILTER', so you're writing:

      foo.push( item.name FILTER html );

And that just don't work.  :-)

But it does in TT3.  '|' becomes a new operator separate from the FILTER
keyword and it works as per your example.
