It seems like too much of a bad hack. I can see the problem it's
solving, but I think we need to come up with a better solution.

Miyagawa came up with an a proof of concept patch a while back to allow
setting values using a subref: $object->last_update( sub { 'SYSDATE' } )

Perhaps something similar might work here?
