Can't you?  If you get these features by delegation instead of by 
subclassing, then you can just use a plain $dbh and you don't change the 
way it works for people who are using it directly.

The main one that I've encountered is adding Class::DBI to an existing 
system.  You have some stuff that uses DBI and expects a vanilla $dbh, 
and then you want to use Class::DBI for a new piece you develop.  I've 
also seen people have toruble on the mod_perl list with Apache::DBI 
wanting to subclass the handle as well, although I think there was more 
going on there since I don't normally have problems from that.
