This is a documentation bug in 0.96.  The Changes file for the
recently announced release candidate 0.999 says:

    - Fixed docs for Essential (defaults to Primary, rather than All)

I've often done the following, after a class's columns have been declared.

      $class->columns(Essential => $class->columns);
