Mostly aimed at Tom T, but may be of interest to others within reach of
Newfoundland/Labrador:

The road from Red Bay to Cartwright is now in service, although the
stretch from Red Bay to Mary's Harbour is apparently too close to the
coast and will be relocated inland (can't be kept open in winter). With
coastal boat connections from Cartwright to Goose Bay that means the
Labrador City - Goose Bay - Cartwright - Red Bay - Blanc Sablon - Northern
Peninsula jaunt is now possible.

On Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula, the old road along the coast from
Eddie's Cove to Big Brook is no longer maintained but probably passable
(one or too fords may be necessary, as the bridges are questionable -- my
wife refused to let me scout it in our rental). Comes out at Big Brook,
an outport of about four families on the 'soon-to-be-closed' list. When
that happens another 30km of road will also be abandoned.
