It was a blown headgasket right above a insuficient crack repair between
#3 & #4 cylinder . careful measuring revealed a concave mating surface
on the block and the head.
I pulled the engine and had both the block and the head resurfaced,
removing about 0.025 " of metal in total.
We ended up clamping the engine block with the exhaust port side down
onto a vertical mill and using a 8" flycutter to recondition the mating
surface. Very cool.
With a new headgasket fitted the engine is back in and performing rather
well. compression is around 145lbs with #4 down a bit at 125lbs.

Had her at the OVLR party no problems.

  What about Martin's exhaust valves?
Martin has got the head off, one burnt exhaust valve replaced but a
crack in the block , same location as on mine ( darn siamese bores) will
need to be mended.

Further details unknown, ask Marty.
