Steve
The rules for driving over there are quite complex (Spanish beauracracy is =20
even worse than French - and they invented it!)
I have been looking at this situation as I hope to relocate and take my =20
Series 1.=20
You must have third party insurance in Spain. You can increase this cover t=
o=20
third party fire and theft and or Full Comprehensive. Additionally some =20
insurance will also cover breakdown and windscreen replacement. I beleive Dr=
iver =20
and Passenger insurance is an optional extra.
Premiums are relatively low and are based on several factors such as horse =20
power, vehicle type, insurance required, gargaging, age, accident record, us=
e=20
of vehicle and place of abode and even mileage - a bit like UK insurance.
Jaume will probably confirm this but it looks like you can only get fully =20
comp on vehicles less than 10 years old.
There are foreign companies operating in Spain so you might be able to =20
continue with your present company (such as Linea Directa)
If you keep the Series 1 registered in the UK you have to insure it with a =20
British company (possibly one having a branch in Spain) but you cannot insur=
e=20
it with a Spanish company.
If you become a resident you cannot operate a vehicle with foreign plates -=20=
=20
therefore you will have to import the Series 1 and register it - expect to p=
ay=20
a tax of 12% of the value (7% for engine under 1600cc). As this is value=20
equates to 20% of the original purchase price that should work out about=20=
=E2=82=AC20.
Vehicles over 10 yrs old have to have an annual MOT and you will need to =20
pass one when applying for registration.
You will also have to pay road tax - the cost depends on where you lve but =20
rural areas are usually cheaper than towns.
Your UK driving licence is valid in Spain but you should have to have it =20
stamped and registered at the local traffic department.
Mail me off line if you want to talk more on this subject.(_ancarig@xxx.xxx_=

Apologies to the other listers if this is boring.
