SER1 Petrol Gauge Wiring

Good Morning!
As the weather chills and the PO's crimped connections become less certain
I spent a few hours yesterday replacing wires. One of those was the feed
to the wiper motors, which runs from the hot post of the petrol gauge
though a push-pull switch to the motors in my Minerva. The push-pull
needs replacing, so I bypassed it (the Mitsuba motors have their own
switches). All is now great -- the wiper motor works -- but the needle on
the petrol gauge, which never rises above 'E' as there's no sending unit
at the tank (the wire ends in space), now is pegged at 'F'. I have since
removed the sending unit wire at the gauge end as well and, to confirm
there is no current coming back from the wiper motors, the wiper motor
lead from the wiper motor -- no change, the needle still reads 'F'.
Any ideas what's going on? Does there need to be a ground through the
petrol gauge and, if so, why didn't I have this problem before? I suppose
I could have a better connection at the gauge than I did, but I didn't
clean the post, just added the new wiper lead to the outside of the hot
lead from the fuse box. Strange.
