The name comes from an illiteration of the name antekinus, which is a small
marsupial mouse native to Australia. It is about the size of a small field
mouse. The life cycle of the female is about two years where they usually
survive to complete the second breeding cycle. The male however becomes
fertile towards the end of the first year and in competition with other
males goes into a breeding frenzy. In this frenzied search for females they
rarely eat and by the end of the period their immune system fails and they
die. In captivity, kept away from females they will often live the same two
year lifespan as the female. The antekinus is endangered through land
clearing and predation by cats, dogs, foxes and placental rodents.

Why do I use the name? It's different, it's very Australian and I guess the
notion of all the boys going around in a frenzy then dropping dead appealed
to me.

Thanks for that then Diana, or should it be Aunti Kinus... I like your
descriptions of the areas - 'pointy bits'!.

When I visited Australia a couple of years ago (including dropping some
parts off to Alan in Canberra) I was amused at the names chosen for some
places. It almost seemed that everything was called whatever it was, ie
the Snowy Mountains, the Great Sandy Desert, but I still chuckle at the
names of the Cheeses made in the Big Cheese (Bega - NSW) - Tasty, Very
Tasty and of course Extra Tasty.......

I suppose it would be rude to ask where the name 'Aunti Kinus' came
from....

Cheers
