Hi Anthony,
There's no load on the overdrive internals when operating in 'direct' so
the noise is coming from inside the Fairey. The interesting thing is that
accel, decel and towing are all higher load conditions than driving free,
and the amplitude of mesh-related noises varies directly with the load, so
I would rule out that source as well. This would seem to point at odd
things -- perhaps under load the chassis is twisting relative to the
overdrive shift lever mounting (noise from the shift fork/sliding clutch
rubbing is transmitted through the linkage to the sheet metal, with these
being bound more tightly under load the noise increases. If this were so
the noise would moderate as the loaded side of the shift fork wears away).
The reason the stock mounting is from a bracket bolted to the transfer
case is to prevent this sort of thing. If your mounting is stock, check to
be sure that there is no incidental contact with the sheet metal possible.
