I thought one of the original reasons for the Birmabright panels was that
after WWII there was a surplus of aircraft grade aluminium, while with
European reconstruction steel was rationed with credits obtained for export
orders and the foreign currency it returned to the UK.

The "success" of the non-rusting, lightweight advantages were a secondary
issue to the manufacturing constraints of the lack of steel.
