Good morning all.

Thought I might be able to shed some light on the Snowy Land Rover brake
modifications. I am in possession of a Snowy Land Rover, a 1958 109 ute, and
I can confirm there were brake / wheel modifications carried out. On the
front wheels a steel disk. (photos now on the garage site) fixed to the
backing plate that was a very close fit to the inside outer edge of the
front rim. The lip also seems to have a 90 degree lip rather than the curved
one to enable a closer fit. Also all holes where the wheel disk and rim meet
are filled with a rubber material to stop further mud from entering.
Together with the front brake modification rear brake drums where drill out
to allow water to escape. Hope this helps. I have also spoken to Burt
Knowles in Cooma who was head of maintenance for the SMHEA transport fleet
back in those days and he has confirmed these were standard modifications to
all Snowy Land Rover on the scheme following the fatal accident due to the
brake wear problems.

Cheers
