Alan,

I am looking at the instructions for assembling a Hamilton Standard constant
speed propeller of similar vintage. The accuracy of assembly and loads that
are met by the fittings are enormous. I am much impressed by the way
stretching of the components when running has to be allowed for in the
assembly process with typical selective assembly and shim tolerances of 1/2
to 2 and 1/2 thou. Static balance needing to be within 3 ounce inches on a
fourteen foot diameter prop is also an astonishing target!

Nick.

Re odd number of threads on the nut, in this case five start, I am
at the moment making tools for dismantling the propellor of a certain
type of famous British WWII fighter, the castellated nut for retaining
the blades in the constant speed unit (hub) has 17 castellations. Only
the British would think of such a number. Features like this would have
really got under the aversaries skin if they had had to work on them if
things had turned out differntly.
    Cheers
