Start-Pilot is commonly used for Diesels in cold conditions. With precautions and it can also be used to try to give life to petrol engines. I would advise to to give it a try. When the engine revs freely while using the starter, without 'unusual' noises, I don't see extraordinary risks. Take the air cleaner of and spray one or two puffs in the carb or even in the inlet manifold if the carb is off, and start the engine. Don't spray to much. Better tried twice, than once with to much gas at a time. Start-pilot is explosive. Follow the instructions on the spray bottle. The risk, as far as I can imagine, is the risk of a 'backfire' induced explosion in inlet manifold and/or carb. That is the reason why you should remove the air cleaner in any case. In case of a cold engine, a backfire may come from an (severe) leaking inlet valve. If you have any, reasonable timed, ignition it should show some life. I cooked the parts in concentrated vinegar for about an hour and brushed them with a soft wire brush. They came out pretty clean. I ordered a carb overhaul kit from Dunfold's and if it is here in time, reassembly will take place next weekend. A slight draw back may be the fact that the accelerator pump fell apart when pulling the housing open and I could not see exactly how the components are supposed to fit together. I am thinking of renewing at least two of the HT leads. Have not figured out yet how the connection between coil and distributor cap is fixed. Could it be that it is only pushed into the cap? And the fixation of the leads at the sparking plugs' end is also a mystery. Although the spark is there I wonder how the lead is supposed to be fixed inside the plug. There is a little plastic washer, but the lead at least in one plug seems to be a pretty loose fit. Certainly it shouldn't be like that.
