Paul,

I have a copy of a technical write up from "the Motor Trader" on 48-50
Series Ones

Ignition data is listed as :-

Advance Range (Centrifugal) (Crank Deg) 36-40 deg
Advance Starts (Crank rpm) 1200-1600
Max Advance (Crank rpm) 4600
Cam Angle (Open Period) 41 +/- 4 deg
Contact ring Spring Tension 20-24 Oz
Condenser Capacity .2 mf
Firing point 15 deg BTDC
Firing Order 1 3 4 2
Contact Breaker Gap .012 in
Plugs Lodge HNLR
Size 14 mm
Gap .023-.026 in

If you pass the advance details to one of the distributor specialists they
shoudl be able to "build to suit". I can't recollect any names used to get
25D's modified for hot mini's for rallying in my youth. I guess such a
service is still available somewhere.

A better bet may be to look out on e-bay, there have been several S! dizzys
on in the last few months, or try some of the specialists Dunsfold may have
something,
if you want to go the second hand route try Stafford Dovey at Red Dragon
Restorations (+44 15097 810058) or look through the adds in the Legend.

Rgds

Dear Friends,

Does anyone of you know about the required advance in ignition for the
1595CC LR engine?

The engine I am currently rebuilding doesn’t have the original DVXH4A type
distributor any more.
Because I can’t get the original distributor, I need to stay with the later
Lucas 25D type. As most Lucas distributors the maximum advance and the
curve
in which the advance occurs, can be tuned. It is the result of the cam and
springs used. You will find an excellent article explaining this at:
www.teglerizer.com/mgstuff/lucastuning.pdf

The question is what advance in what curve does the 1595cc engine require?
The only data I can find is in the workshop manual: static advance of 15
degree (page A-12, Operation A/64, distributor and ignition timing).

The current Lucas 25D on my 1595CC engine comes from an 1100 CC A-engine
used in mini’s, build somewhere in the ’60.
According to the used components it gives a maximum advance of 32 degrees.
Which, in combination with the static 15 degrees comes on a maximum of 47
degrees before TDC. To me this seems rather much. But I am not sure.

Retuning the Lucas distributor is rather simple

Do you have a clue or further information?

I will be pleased to hear from you.
