Karen,
Welcome to the list. As Diana suggested, you should sign on to the
Series 1 garage where there is quite a wealth of contacts and links as
well as many before and after photos of what is possible with our
little trucks. As a rule, any problem you are looking at has been
tackled before by one of us somewhere in the world. Tom Bache is the
North American contact for the Series 1 Club out of England, and a
great friend who has helped many of us source parts as well as advice.
A good place to start is one of the reproduction copies of the Series 1
service manuals. Another valuable source of information for parts, are
the 3 or 4 different Land Rover magazines that are published in the UK.
You can find them in any of the large chains of booksellers, like
Barnes and Noble. For the price of a cup of Starbucks, you can browse
them all afternoon. :-)))
Taking photos as you dismantle the car is essential so you see the
relationships when you reassemble it. Buy the large zip lock backs and
label everything you remove, Don't throw away anything, however rusty
and bad, until you have a replacement for it. WD-40 was designed as
"W"ater "D"isplacement and protection from rust but it is not the best
penetrating oil to remove rusted bolts. Try and obtain a product call
"PB Blaster," a funny name but one of the best products out there.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress
