Bruce,

The rings are just aluminium - 20 gauge (by eye - not measured) cut to fit
over the plates that retain the big oil seal. They are C shaped with the
split where the lace that connects the edges of the leather is. Holes are
drilled to clear the bolts which go through both the ring and the retainer. 

The outer diameter is just that of the seal retainer and the inner a
matching distance to make the ring symmetrical about the bolts. 

Apart from not having sharp edges that's it!
