There are plenty of Series 1's running around with Series 2 and 3 diff
housings and particularly Salisbury diffs on 109's. There is some concern
about the tyres rubbing on the mudguards (wings if U R in the UK) but you
need to replace both front and rear.
See Bob's 1951 80" as an example of series 2 axles on a Series 1

I have been offered some Lightweight Axles, and was toying with the
idea of using them in my rebuild. I think the Lightweight has a slightly
narrower track than normal Series 2 and 3's, so presume they would look
OK on a Series One - or am I completely off the mark! Any thoughts
please.......( I know the purists won't like it)
