I'm no expert on this but dynamos use a separate voltage regulator and
control box, ie the black lucas box on the bulkhead. This not only
controls the charging circuit but also provides regulation (of voltage
and or current depending on the type)
An alternator will do the control of the charging circuit itself (hence
the 3 wires from the alternator instead of 2 from the dynamo), however
if you have any extra electrical instruments such as electrical temp
gauges you may need the Series 3 style separate voltage regulator as
well to provide that function. What I don't know is, if you only have
the standard set of S1 instruments and lights, you can get away without
the voltage regulator, as they are all 12V and not to sensitive to
voltage changes.
I'm sure someone who has actually converted to an alternator will come
up with a fuller explanation!

We are now implementing a new ticketing system to improve response time
and
reduce the chances of a request being missed. This does mean a change of
email address, but will help us to help you more efficiently. In future
we
ask that new job requests be sent to nsmsjobs@xxxx.xx.xx.xx and general
queries/discussions to nsms@xxxx.xx.xx.xx.
Thanks for your cooperation - the NSMS Team.
