I had the same symptons 2 weeks ago, now  the old girl is sitting in my
drive with a burnt out dynamo and regulator and a lovley molten mess of a
NEW wiring loom.
I cant not tell exactly where the fault occurred which resulted in the mess
i now have to clean up.
what Im am saying is DON'T EGNOR IT!!!!!!!it could be quite expensive.
I'm not saying it will happen to yours but the sympton are the same,good
luck.

The only time I had trouble like this it turned out to be a short circuit
in the regulator terminals.
