hello Ian,

The best way to check the condition of the valves is to remove them for
inspection. You will need a valve spring compression tool. Usually, the
intake valves fare rather well with use. Valve face and seats should be
bright and unpitted. However, the exhaust valves and their respective
seats can be worn. Such wear to check for is pitting, burning, valve face
wear and seat recession, Once valves are removed, they can be cleaned with
a wire wheel to show the bare metal surface. A straight edge applied to the
flat bottom may show crowning as these valve can start to get pulled into
the seat with wear. I do not know if it is possible to obtain hardened
valves and exhaust seats for a 2 litre. Others may be of more help.

Hope this can help,
