SER1 Thermostat housing

HI:

The thermostat housing on my '55 2.0l is heavily corroded.  The lip
that the thermostat sits on has two places where the metal chipped. 
Do you think I can get away with it?  there are no major problems
other than pitting and thinning of the metal from years of scale
accumulation.  Are the putty fillers that can mend the lip to give a
good seal when the thermostat is closed?
