Ian,

This needs great care when dealing with early Rover aluminium. The exact
constituents of the alloy are not the same as modern materials. For many of
the early castings the melting point is low and it is very, very hard to get
good welds. I have seen skilled people fail to do this on a couple of
occasions.

Your other option is to have aluminium in the housing built up and machined
back.  The building up can be done by anyone with aluminium welding
equipment and the machining by a general engineering workshop or even by
yourself and plenty of careful work.
