George,

You might want to do what they do in Africa. 
Slice 4 old innertubes along the inside of the doughnut and cut out the valve stem. 
Place inside the tires, and then put in the proper innertubes.
This was done to help prevent flats (acacia thorns are murder, first hand experience on that!).

I've done this with my Bridgestone "Jeep Service" tires (not available in the USofA, sorry) on my 80"
and haven't had a flat in 7 years now.  As many in OVLR can attest to, I don't baby my truck, either.

Wish I could go on the trip, but just cannot afford the time off...  :(
