Also the later s2a/ s3 column uses a nut on top to hold the wheel on, no clamp.

Tony,
It sounds like you have a column out of a late 2A or S3. around 67-68 they 
changed to the wheel with plastic spokes and the smaller spline. Also 
should have a spring under the steering wheel hub.
