I also have a 1955 86" and had the same problem. Mine gradually became 
worse until she began to cut out through lack of petrol. It took quite 
some time to become this bad.

 After cleaning out all the usual dirty places, I finally found out 
where the blockage was.In the fuel filter (the glass globe). Where  the 
fuel comes in from the tank, it enters the filter through two small 
holes in the aluminium body of the filter. These holes had become 
blocked. Probably over 50 years.

After cleaning these holes and the rest of the filter out  all has been 
hunky dory.
