Alex

I have just checked my Lucas catalogue. All is not lost. The basic starter
motor for ALL the Series One Land Rovers is the same. Lucas M418G

The differences are in the:
* "Drive End Brackets" the 53 LR needs the Lucas part 255673 where the
55-58 starter that you have is Lucas part 256495
* "Pinion and Sleeve" 53 needs 255672 and you have 255194
and a couple of other springs etc to make them all engage.

If you can find a non functioning early starter your auto-electrician may be
able to make the conversions for you.

Cheers
Diana

Or a no bolt starter motor and starter housing with 1 big bolt and three
small ones!!

I have posted a message to the LROCV for you, I hope you get some results.
