AW: SER1 Steering Box Rebuild

Hi Mark,
It is relatively simple to "test" a steering box. The main common tests are:
backlash or hysteresis of drive (doesn't matter whether worm&nut or ball
type) and torque needed to apply a certain force to the steering arm.
However, without having the spec it is impossible to come close to the
conditions the design engineers had in mind.
A far more practical approach, and as you have it out this is the easiest
way, is to clamp the steering column into a vise, then fix the steering arm
so that it can not move (clamping) and measure the movement of the steering
wheels until firm resistance can be felt. Adjust the box then so that this
play does not exceed two inches. After assembly to the vehicle, the added
play in steering relay and track rod ends will make this rise to something
like 3 inches. This should come close to what had been intended originally.
If you want to do even better, you measure the free turning angle of the
steering wheel with a spring balance as used for adjusting the swivel pins.
Go 4 kg in each direction and see by how much the wheel can be turned.
Mit freundlichen Grüssen/Best regards

Betreff: Re: SER1 Steering Box Rebuild
Hi all,
Talking of steering box repairs, is there any way of testing a steering box?
The reason for asking is that the steering on my series one has always been
a bit 'vague' and as the vehicle is currently in bits, I wondered if it may
be good practice to get the box rebuilt. I do not know if the 'play' that I
experienced was due to the condition of the steering box, but as part of my
rebuild, I am also replacing the front swivels etc, and will also be fitting
a series two support bracket to the steering box and bulkhead, and just
wondered if it was worth getting the box done.
Any ideas as to what the cost might be as well?
Cheers
