That seal is a modification done in Australia, I don't know if it was done
elsewhere. The original system was a reverse Archemedes screw which pumped
the oil back into the sump, unfortunately it also pumped water into the sump
when wading rivers etc. The modification was to grind off the Archemedes
screw and fit the two alloy seal retainers, the seal is some sort of carbon
rope and is similar to that used in GM engines of the period.

As the removal of the screw was done at different places the crank at that
point is non-standard so there may not be a neoprene type seal. Mine was
reconditioned by PARRY L W (ENGINEERING) PTY LTD
  ..Eng Recndtnrs 206 Princes Hwy Arncliffe 2205 (02) 9597 5566 who sourced
and fitted the replacement rope seal last year perhaps they can assist you.

Cheers
Diana

Hi All

I have a 1950 80" thats had the common Holden engine conversion. Its
currently getting a 1.6 litre birthday present .

The rear main seal in the 1.6 litre is a two part affair . What is the best
way of affecting a lasting seal, the original setup was a cork ring that
fits into a groove , is there a neoprene insert available ? What do you guys
do ?
